How to make Massage oil at home

Today we will learn a massage oil recipe or how to make massage oil at home for pain relief which really close to my heart.

I love to share our ancient recipes of Ayurveda with you guys.

This was a recipe given to me by my grandmother.

She had all the knowledge in the world about herbs and oils. We never had to see a doctor for any pain.

Just go to grandma and ask. She would whip up an oil for the pain. Be it body pain, ear pain, hair, skin name anything.

She passed on the recipes to me about how to make massage oil.

Those remedies were so effective that we never had to waste our money on the expensive products from the store.

Today we will be discussing one of such recipe for you. We will learn how to make massage oil.

Ingredients for How to make massage oil.

Bhaal Jhad – Ratan Jyoth – Alkanet Root – I love to use Ratan Jyot in my massage oil because it gives such a nice reddish colour to the oil. I just love it. It is an anti-inflammatory ingredient that soothes sore muscles and gives relief. It is also soothing to nerves thus helps us in sleeping especially for people with insomnia this is a miracle ingredient. It is also antibacterial so it protects our outer layer of skin from bacteria and germs.

I use Ratan Jyoth for both my Ayurvedic herbal hair oil and Massage oil as it is super super good for hair too.

Akarkar – Anacyclus Pyrethrum – Akarkar is from my state of Uttarakhand. It is the foothills of the Himalayas and I love this state for that. I love my city so much so that this whole website is dedicated to it.

Anyways, Akarkar helps in balancing Vata dosha which means the air element of the body responsible for arthritis is balanced by akarkar. It helps people suffering from joint pain, muscle pain and arthritis.

It is rich in antioxidant properties thus improving blood circulation throughout the body and give relief to pain effected area.

Kud – Kushta – Indian Costus Root – Saussurea lappa – As per Ayurveda Kud is pungent in nature and helps balance Kapha Dosha. The sweeter taste and hot potency of Kud help balance the Vata Dosha. So basically it takes care of two doshas in one herb. This is the reason we have added them to our pain-relieving massage oil.

Nirgundi – Vitex Negundo – Chinese Chaste Tree – Horse Shoe Vitex – Don’t go by name I don’t get this herb from China. We get this herb around water bodies here in India.

We Indians love this herb because it is olden day’s pain killer during those monthly cycle days( when used as tea). It is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial in nature and it helps in healing wounds. It helps with soreness of muscles

It is especially effective for people with backache and knee ache.

We do plant nirgundi in our yard for easy access when we have tooth ache or or throat issues.

Ajwain – Caraway Seeds – Carrom seeds – It is a very common herb found in the Indian kitchen. My husband loves to eat Ajwain Paratha for morning breakfast during the winter months. It brings warmth to the body. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties which protect our skin.

It is also a pain killer and can be useful for muscle spasms, colic pains, asthma, menstrual cramps and arthritis.

Just drinking Ajwain tea is also super effective on muscle issues if you have chronic muscle pain.

Launka – Cloves – Every Indian knows about cloves and I am sure the whole world knows about Cloves. After all the British came to India in search of this spice and the world was in love with Cloves and its sister pepper back in those days. It just not a taste enhancer but also full of medicinal properties.

Another very common spice from my kitchen which is full of antioxidants and antibacterial properties.

These helps skin to fight bacterial growth n the skin and leave a healthy look on it.

It is also known to help bring evenness on the skin of the body. So it has dual purpose first to help in fight bacteria on the skin secondly to even tone the skin.

Javetri – Mace – Javetri is such a beautiful herb to look at. It is the over covering nutmeg seed.

It has calming effect on the nerves and help them relax. This property helps in diseases like gout, arthritis and muscle pain.

It helps in blood circulation of the body and thus keeps the sore area relaxed.

This makes Javetri a must add ingredient for our massage oil recipe for pain relief.

Shatavari – Asparagus Racemosus – Shatavari is a well known anti aging herb of India.

It anti spasmodic , anti fungal, anti bacterial, anti allergic, anti septic, cooling and diuretic in nature.

Shatavari helps in reducing free radicals from damaged skin and reduce wrinkles.

Shatavari is are especially useful in backpain, gout and arthritis.

It is super useful in massage oil to help combat tropical problems. This makes it a must add ingredient in our herbal massage oil recipe.

Ashwaghanda – Indian Ginseng –  Ashwagandha is by far my favorite ingredient. It has so many multi-purpose benefits. It balances our body Dosha and brings it to the proportion that is needed.

From weight reduction to regulation of blood sugar levels it helps in everything.

Ashwagandha is also known to boost the production of hyaluronan which is essential for skin hydration.

When your skin is hydrated there is very less chance that it will have wrinkles which makes Ashwagadha a anti aging herb.

Nagkesar – Mesua Ferrea – Nagkesar is also known as Vajrakath i.e. it is so powerful that it can cut the axe which means it is a super-effective on aliments.

It has load of healing properties. As per Ayurveda it is bitter and hot. It helps to balance Vata Dosha in the body.

It helps in very useful for sore muscles, swelling, arthritis, gout and backpain.

It is also heals cuts, wounds and reduces the stink from wounds.

Sauth – Dry Ginger – Oh How much I love ginger. I have it every day in my Indian Chai or tea. It takes my tea to another level of satisfaction.

Ginger when dried is called Sauth.

It is hot in nature and sweet in taste and helps balance the Vata Dosha and Kapha Dosha.

It is anti inflammatory and anti bacterial in nature.

It helps to reduce inflammation and is also antibacterial in nature.

It is an ideal ingredient for our massage oil.

Jaifal – Nutmeg – Nutmeg is the seed of Javetri.

My mother use to use jaifal at home whenever she made something which was a bit difficult to digest.

Jaifal tea was given to us to detoxify our body whenever we were sick.

It is an anti inflammatory properties which help us reducing the pain in the body.

The macelignan present in nutmeg helps in depigmentation of the skin.

It reduces the synthesis of pigmentation and storage of melanin pigment in the skin thus acting as a skin whitening agent. It is also a photoaging agent which means it protect our skin against UV rays. It evens out the skin tone on the body.

Methi – Fenugreed seeds – Methi is another herb from my kitchen cabinet which I use it daily in our gravies and sauteed veggies. These little yellow seeds are full of so many benefits I guess I can do one blog post of just that.

Just eating these seeds daily in the morning in form of tea or adding it to regular meals will not let any disease come near you and the best part is it enhances the taste of the meal.

Methi is bitter yellow seeds which helps us balance out Vata Dosha.

It is particularly helpful for those suffering from gout, arthritis, asthama, and skin issues.

It is anti inflammatory and anti arthritic in nature and thus becomes a must add ingredient in our massage oil recipe.

Oils in Massage Oil Recipe

Sesame oil – Til Oil – This is the oldest known oil in the Indian subcontinent. Charaka, Father of Surgery, has a treatise or write up written explaining the benefits of sesame oil. In fact the term til means nourishment.

Sesame oil is used for Abhyanga i.e whole body massage here in India.

It is a oil rich in linolenic acid and is antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in nature.

It is powerful oil and is used to reduce Vata Dosha. In Ayurveda pain in muscles and joins is due to Vata Dosha.

It is not easily absorbed in the skin and allows us to massage our body physically which is what we want when we do abhyanga as physical friction on the muscle helps to circulate our blood flow in that area.

It is very versatile oil and the best part is it does not freeze like coconut in winter climate.

In Uttarakhand winters are pretty harsh as it snows in the mountains which is just 20 kms aways from us.

Sunflower oil – Sunflower oil is perfect when we want to improve the moisture content of the skin.

Sunflower oil contains linoleic and oleic acids more than olive oil. It helps to remove toxins from skin and keep the skin moisturized thus reducing signs of againg.

It fatty acids in the oil helps to keep skin glowing and radiant.

Recipe for Massage oil

100 grams – Nagkesar

100 grams – Methi seeds

100 grams – Saunth

50 grams – Rathan Jyot

50 grams – Nirgundi

50 grams  – Akarkar

50 grams – Kud – Kushta

100 grams – Launka

50 grams – Satawar

50 grams – Ajwain

50 grams – Javitri

50 grams – Jaiphal

2 Liters – Sesame oil

1 Liter – Sunflower oil

Method to make Massage oil

Step 1

Use a glass jar which can fit all the above herbs and oil. Clean it and sanitize it.

Step 2

Add all the above herbs in the jar.

Step 3

Now pour the oils into the jar till the time all the herbs are properly immersed in it.

There are two ways to do infusion we will discuss both

Step 4

Now you can just cap the jar and allow it to infuse in the sun for over a month.


Step 4

Use a double boiler method to infuse this oil as I have shown in the video. You will need about 4 – 6 hours to do this hot infusion.

Even after the hot infusion I let the herbs sit in the oil for a weeks time just to be sure all the herbs are infused properly.

Step 5

Now :

  • Make sure you keep it in a dry dark area when you would like to store it for longer time.
  • If you wish to increase the shelf life of this massage oil add 1% of total oil weight Vitamin E.
  • Vitamin E is an antioxidant which will improve the shelf life of the massage oil.
  • It will also be super cool for your skin as it has omega fatty acids which help reduce age marks on the skin.
  • Make sure you don’t go above 1 % as the comodogenic rating for this oil is 5 which means it has tendency to block pores and the last thing we want is break out of acne all over the body. This a total optional ingredient.
  • Sesame oil has shelf life of 2 years so if you make this herbal massage oil with just sesame oil it will increase the shelf life of your oil.
  • If you wish to add essential oil do it at your discretion as it already has so many herbs and they impart their own fragrance to the oil.

Your Ayurvedic Herbal Massage oil for pain relief is ready.


How to do self Abhyanga Massage

Step 1

Brush of your body with a dry brush to remove all dirt from the body and make it ready to absorb the oil which will be massaged into it.

Step 2

You can warm up your oils on a stove or between your palms. It should be just warm and not hot for your skin.

Step 3

Always massage your body towards the heart.

First begin from your legs in upward motion.

Lower half of your body till chest should be massaged from further end towards the body and heart.

When it comes to hands massage your fingers first and then massage your arms and bring it towards the heart in lateral motion.

While massaging your neck try downward motion.

Face should be massaged in circular motion as we do not want a sagging skin.

Same goes for back muscles too.

Step 4

Each body part should be massaged for not more than 20 minutes.

Whole body should take not more than 45 minutes of massage.

Step 5

Let the oil sit on your body for 10 – 15 minutes so that the oil that you have massaged with seeps in the skin and does the magic.

Step 6

You can use warm water to take bath after the massage. I would suggest skip soap when you do a massage but if you need to then use a mild soap.

Step 7

Never step outside in open air immediately after a massage give it 30 minutes time.
