Substitutions for how to make hair balm

You can substitute BTMS 50 with other emulsifiers that are good for hair like Varisoft or Aromocare 70.

Cetyl alcohol gives body to the mixture so I usually don’t like to substitute that.

You cannot substitute Ayurvedic Herbal Hair Oil as it is the gist of this whole product and it is what will give the balm its character.

If you wish you can substitute other soft oils and butter as per things available to you.

I have used Rosemary EO you can substitute with any of your favorite essential oil or fragrance oils. Its totally upto you.

What is a hair setting balm or a hair pomade?

Hair setting balm or a hair pomade is thick product that help your hair stay in a specific position or allow us to keep it straight. Usually it is used by men to keep their hair in place as they are short and can easily get displaced.

There are basically two types of hair balms as per evolution of hair balms

Orthodox hair balm – which usually have a wax like beeswax in it. It is an anhydrous product so usually without any preservative so we can call it a all natural product too.

Unorthodox hair balm –Emulsified unorthodox hair balm which can be either a emulsified product with help of BTMS – 50 or emulsifying wax or any other emulsifying product. It is a water based product like lotions or heavy creams.

Gels are another kind of hair setting tool which is very popular.
